Protecting Data In The Cloud: A Shared Responsibility

With the growing adoption of cloud solutions, businesses are leveraging these technologies to store, manage and process their data. More than 60% of their information is now hosted in the cloud, and between 70% and 80% of organizations are integrating public storage services into their operations. This migration brings huge benefits in terms of flexibility, scalability and cost reduction, but it also comes with considerable risks. Understanding these risks and clarifying everyone’s roles in terms of security are essential to protecting the company’s digital assets.

Protecting Data In The Cloud

Storing data in the cloud does not eliminate security threats. It transforms and shifts them.

  • Increased risk of cyberattack

Cloud environments, although advanced, are prime targets for cybercriminals. Flaws in configurations, the use of weak passwords or phishing attacks can expose confidential data.

  • Compliance requirements

Many industries are subject to strict data protection regulations. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in severe fines and damage to a company’s reputation.

  • Data sovereignty

The geographical location of cloud servers can have legal implications. Companies need to ensure that their data complies with local privacy laws and is not exposed to unwanted breaches.

  • Business continuity

In the event of a disaster, whether natural or linked to a cyberattack, the loss of access to data can paralyze operations. Ensuring rapid recovery is essential to minimize disruption.

The Shared Responsibility Model

A common misconception is that the cloud provider becomes the sole guarantor of data security. In reality, information protection is based on a model of shared responsibility, with each party playing a distinct and complementary role.

  • The supplier’s responsibilities

Cloud providers manage infrastructure security. This includes maintaining data centres, defending networks and applying encryption measures. They also guarantee the availability of services and offer tools to help their customers protect their information.

  • The client’s responsibilities

Customers, for their part, take responsibility for their data and their users. This means configuring access correctly, training employees in cybersecurity, and regularly monitoring for suspicious activity. They also need to activate available protections, such as multi-factor authentication and daily backups.

Covering information in the cloud requires a proactive and collaborative approach between provider and user. By understanding their respective roles, businesses can optimize security and make the most of cloud solutions.
