How to Ensure the Business Security of Your Remote Employees

In the past, a business was only able to operate effectively if all of its staff and equipment were under a single roof. These days, however, with mobile workstations and communication apps, employees can be all over the world and still accomplish their tasks with live input from managers.

Your company may be considering remote employees, but before you do, you need to know about the security threats they’ll face and how to prevent them.

Monitor Your Staff’s Activities

No matter how focused we are at work, everybody needs a break to unwind and refresh our minds. However, remote employees may be inclined to spend more time off task as they don’t have a manager monitoring them all day, and could find themselves surfing the web for risky sites instead.

Installing time management software on your employees’ work-provided computers can keep them on track for their projects and keep them from getting distracted and threatening their security.

Avoid Working in Public Spaces

It can be very tempting to grab your laptop, hit the streets, and work in your favorite coffee shop on a warm sunny day. However, working in a public space not only puts your business at risk because of unsecured wi-fi spots, but any business calls you have to make can be overheard by anyone, no matter their topic.

Spending every day cooped up at home may not be ideal, but at least you don’t have to worry about prying eyes or unwelcome ears.

Use VPNs for Encryption

VPNs, or virtual private networks, are an excellent tool for businesses with remote workers because they act as a secure pathway to funnel all of your data and communication.

VPNs are also a great tool because they hide or reroute a user’s IP address, giving you extra protection from hackers online looking to trace your online activities back to a physical destination.

More businesses are embracing remote employees and a decentralized environment, but while these may improve company productivity and lower costs, you need to be aware of all the security threats facing your company with the shift.
