Fake Ads on Social Media
TechCrunch was made aware of ads on Facebook that linked to a malicious app. Cybercriminals will tailor their malware campaigns to resemble links to popular apps and you should be aware of this.
Cybercriminals are much more advanced than ever before. For many, it is a full-time job to trick you into clicking on something that is not real. As cybersecurity evolves, so do the criminal activities associated with it.
How to Spot a Fake Ad
- Does the advertiser seem legitimate?
- Hover over the URL and investigate before even clicking through.
- Does the ad seem too good to be true?
- Does it link to a credible website, with complete details?
- Are there noticeable errors in spelling and grammar?
- Are the images poor quality?
What can you do to protect yourself?
Facebook ad targeting is turned on by default. Turn it off by clicking on Settings on your Facebook profile, and then Ads (on the mobile app, it’s Privacy > Ad Preferences). Set your individual controls as you’d like. Unfortunately, you cannot entirely opt-out of ads on Facebook at this time.
The same limitations apply with Google, you cannot completely opt-out of the ads but you can turn off ad targeting. Sign in to your Google account, click on Settings, then Data & Personalization> Ad Personalization> Ad settings and turn it off.
