When was the last time you upgraded the technology in your business? Do the computers in your office look like the one pictured? If so… stop reading now and go buy new PCs!
As technology advances at a pace faster than most can keep up with, we’re often wondering, how long is too long? Should you budget for a tech refresh at the end of each year? Every other year? Do you buy computers at the same time as servers? Printers? Routers? Firewalls? The list is endless.
With new Windows updates, yearly software updates, relicensing fees, compatibility of old and new components, mobility solutions, the costs can really start to add up. If you’re one to constantly worry about these types of things, sooner or later you’ll find yourself frustrated and broke, as you pull out the last of your hair in anger.
Have no fear, my hairy headed friends. Here are some good giveaways to tell you when you should start thinking about upgrading.
The first and most obvious way to tell is functionality. Is your technology still performing the tasks you originally bought it for? Does that printer still print? Server still backup regularly? If you’ve noticed no significant shortcomings, then you’re fine!
The second giveaway is speed. Does everything seem to be slow and laggy lately? Does it take forever to load a webpage? Perhaps you should get rid of that Windows XP computer for something a bit more this century.
The third way to tell is compatibility. With mobile tech on the rise, more people working from home, and more business being conducted globally, it remains important to stay current with technology. Do you experience connectivity issues? Does your laptop have a hard time finding your cloud? Does your computers fail to connect to your VPN? If so, then you should think about upgrading.
Regardless of whether or not you’re currently experiencing any tech issues, MicroAge recommends you do a complete tech refresh every 5 years. If you maintain the 5 year lifecycle, you can be fairly confident that you won’t experience any performance issues, you will be able to work efficiently, and you won’t experience any compatibility issues. Pending major technology setbacks, 5 years is what we recommend to ensure you’re running up-to-date with the latest, and safest technology.
